Just a few days late :P Sorry for the delay, things have been a little hectic. We want to thank everyone for all their warm thoughts and prayers as we well needed it. It was a long labor, yet fast and furious delivery. Audrey Nalia was born August 27 @ 3:31am weighing in @ 7lbs 12oz and 22 inches long. It's hard to believe that ALL that fit inside of me!!

Mama, Papa and baby are all doing well and adjusting to the wonderful world of parenthood. It is truly a blessing and amazing experience.

As many of you well know, were expecting our first baby in about 4 weeks. Its a very exciting time in our lives and it brings us bittersweet news to let you know that Sunday, July 26th will be our last day on Fourth Street as a retail location. Its been a great 5 years getting to know many of you (many by name, some by facial recognition, some by their consistent ordering patterns,etc. ) and seeing many of your children grow from the womb on up to being able to see over the counter :P

Sketch was our "first baby" and all the heart, love, soul and energy we put into that we'd like to re-focus and give to our child. Family always comes first with us! Sketch isn't disappearing...it's just taking a lil break from the retail aspect. We look forward to serving you our goodies (candies, pastries, sauces/fixins, ice cream cakes and other custom orders) via online!!

It's been a crazy busy 2009 start for us. Our anticipated January vacation plans were put on hold to help with the preparations of my favorite brother's wedding ( he's my only brother ;P ) It was a fairly intimate wedding, about 150 people... which is pretty good considering I'm Filipino! Its always nice to see family and friends. Here are some pix of the happy SWA couple, courtesy of their photographer Serena Grace. Welcome to the family Dee!

And for dessert... we made dark chocolate cupcakes topped with a cocoa nib mousse. Delish!!

Five years ago, we decided to use a small artisan coffee company called Blue Bottle, and many of you had the look of Blue who Bottle? Coffee, what?! Well, since then, they've grown into somewhat of a coffee cult in the Bay Area. Now everyone knows, serves and drinks Blue Bottle this and Blue Bottle that. It's been a great 5 years using their coffee in our granitas, ice creams and French Press; however, with their continuing plans of expansion and rapid growth, Sketch no longer met their criteria. Which brings us to Barefoot Coffee Company...

Their a great company committed to providing their customers with the best coffee, roasted to order, and shipped the same day to ensure freshness and quality. They roast every day. HAPPY 2009!!

We hope everyone had a fabulous New Year's. We sure did! Though it's a little strange for us to start the new year without a vacation (many of you regulars know that we wait all year for our January break) we're here at Sketch cranking out the goodies. So far, it's off to a good start!

So where are we going?? Good question. We're headed off to Simi Valley which is in SoCal. Whoppee!! :P Our plans of vacationing somewhere warm and tropical like South America or Costa Rica were sweet but short-lived. Engagements, weddings and baby showers (FYI: not ours) quickly filled our calender...which leaves us to postpone our plans and divvy up our vacation time--end of January and middle of March. Details as follows:
We will be closed from Thursday,, January 22nd - Sunday, February 1st, 2009. Re-open Monday, February 2nd.

Please keep in mind that if you would like to order an ice cream cake before our break, the last day to order is Mon. January 19th.

Halloween on Fourth Street..

It's a little surprising (well not really) that with the number of kids and people that come down on this street that this was Fourth Street's first "trick-or-treat" celebration. We were a little skeptical at first because it was supposed to be a wet Halloween, but the rain held out so it ended up being a great turnout. We passed out our cocoa nib marshmallows...yum! Unfortunately, we ended up running out of marshmallows much earlier than expected because of the swarm of kids. Maybe next year they'll decide to make this event a little shorter...how about 3-6pm instead?

For the last 2 years, it's become our tradition to close on our anniversary. However, due to the leap year, our third year anniversary 10/4 falls on a Saturday (which, we know, for many people consider it their "weekend"). So the question remains: would there be tears shed if you came be and we were closed that Saturday? Would you understand or be pissed? Hmmmm. I guess there is another selfless option...we close early that day?!

Let us know what you think, but don't wait too long it's not that far away :P

August was an unusually warm month for the Bay Area...gas prices were down, tourism was high, celebrations left and right and, of course, lots of ice cream!! It was my husband's birthday (and his twin brother), my father's birthday, my parents' anniversary, Sketch's 4th birthday (or anniversary?), pregnancy announcements and wedding engagements.

As some of you may already know, we work everyday and take a few weeks/month off for vacation during the winter; however, with the input of family, friends and some "regulars", we've decided to divide our time off in order to attend 4 upcoming family weddings. Which brings us to announce:

We will be closed Monday, September 22nd to Thursday, September 25th, 2008 for a family wedding. If you would like to order an ice cream cake, please note that cakes and special orders must be PICKED UP by Sunday, 9/21 and that Saturday, 9/27 will be the next earliest day for PICKUPS. Please plan accordingly.

In case you were wondering why everytime you come in and fruit bars are "sold out" it's because we're patiently waiting for our agave nectar. Apparently, large companies like Kellogs and Cheesecake Factory (believe it or not) see the growing popularity of agave so they are trying it captivate a new market...which in turn leaves us waiting!

For now, we have frozen bananas and a FEW fudgesicles (please note, that our fudgesicles are also made with agave, so once we're out of these, there will be another "sold out" sign on the board).

Fourth of July Hours...

July 4th falls on a Friday this year, so for many of you that will mean a 3-day holiday filled with BBQ's and parties. As for us at Sketch, will be OPEN from 12-4pm packing up pints to satisfy the "dessert requirement" that came along with the BBQ invitation and for the sweet tooths that stroll on down 4th street. Our bad for not blogging so frequently (there's been much radio silence). We've been busy bees. Wow, all this hot weather sure does bring the masses. Congratulations to all the graduates and for the many who have finished another year.

We are definitely having a wonderful fruit season with all this dry warm weather (though we know its not good for global warming)...we've already had some great peaches, apricots, cherrys, strawberries, blueberries. We can't wait for the santa rosa plums and the rest of the berries to come to its peak flavor and sweetness.

One more note, we will be out of cones this weekend due to the servicing of our cone maker. More next week.

Spring has Sprung!

Well, to all of you who are keeping track, today marks the first day of spring. And what a beautiful spring day it was! The birds are chirping, the flowers are in bloom, pollen is everywhere and the sneezing has begun. As the old saying goes, "Spring Is In The Air". For those of us who have lived here in the bay area for a long time, we are fortunate to have a calender to remind us what time of the year it is ('cause it could be 85 degrees in the middle of December!) As Mark Twain once said, "The coldest winter I ever spent was the summer in San Francisco". Now isn't that the truth! Nevertheless...spring is here and so are our hopes that those succulent, sun-ripened strawberries are just around the corner. We've been keeping our eyes peeled and our noses a sniffin' for them at Monterey Market. Let me tell you, we cant wait...enough citrus and tropical fruits already... :P Rest assured, we'll be sure to let you all know when the berries hit. In the mean time, we'll keep providing you all with the best goodies possible.

Oh, and please note that in observence of Good Friday, March 21st we will be closing at 6 p.m. and will be closed Easter Sunday, March 23rd.

Calling All Fudgesicle Lovers!!!

As posted in our March 6 blog, we've begun to use 100% organic agave nectar in our fruit bars with great success. We love them and our sugar-free customers are loving them too!!

Growing up as a child brings vivid memories of indulging in a fudgesicle or two...okay, maybe three (on a hot summer day it just hits the spot, could you blame me?) At least it did back then. Now that we're older, wiser and certainly more food savvy, those so-called fudgesicles are just not gonna cut it. So, here at Sketch, we've been working hard at creating the ultimate fudgesicle--one that's rich and creamy and actually consists of dark chocolate. Did we mention sugar free??? No way! Way!!!

Sugar-free is not just for diabetics. Though it may have a negative connotation, there are many people who choose to leave sugar out of their diets for other health reasons. Regardless of the reasons, we all deserve indulgences that actually ARE satisfying. So...we have taken our already fabulous fudgesicles and made them with agave. The result? Pure satisfaction for everyone! You wouldn't even know that they're sugar-free :)

For all you fudgesicle connoisseurs and lovers, come check them out and leave happily guilt free!

It's not Spring time yet, but according to the governmental change of daylight savings time, we need to set our clocks forward tonight. That means we lose an hour of sleep to gain an hour of sunshine!! Cheers!

New Year's Resolutions...

With two months finished and ten left to go, there is much work to be done. Here's a little look on our progress.:

One of our Sketch resolutions this year was to be better about updating our blog. So, how are we doing? Eh, okay. Definitely not as frequent as we would like (our hats off to those of you who blog on a daily/regular basis...it's a full-time job all on its own!).

Our second resolution was to make a sugar-free product available. And guess what? We did. Going on its second week now, we've been selling sugar-free organic D'Anjou Pear fruit bars. Made only with 100% organic agave, what's not to like? For those of you who might not know, agave nectar is a natural liquid sweetener that comes from the Blue Agave plants in Mexico. These plants, which look similar to cactus, flourish in volcanic soil. At maturity, their leaves measure at about 5-8ft. tall and 7-12ft. in diameter.

Here are some of the main health benefits to agave:
- improves the functioning of the gall bladder by breaking down fats easier
- its low glycemic level makes it safe for even diabetics
- helps remove any artery blockage associated with high cholesterol levels
- contains a number of healthy bacteria (inulins) that are good for the digestive system because it promotes probiotic bacteria as it aids in calcium absorption in the body. Iinulins are about 1/3-1/4 the food energy of sugar or carbs and 1/6 -1/9the food energy of fat.

More good news...fudgesicles are well on there way!!

Hope this is happy news for any of you who can't have or know someone who can't have sugar and want a better alternative to the splenda, stevia, aspartame or other artificially sweetened products out there. Just in case you were wondering...the fruit bars won't always be pear :P

Bologna, Trip Part 1

As some of you may already know, we have returned safely from our yearly vacation and are back in full swing at Sketch. Every January (or in the case of our honeymoon in '06 February) we close shop, take a little break and and are blessed enough to travel. This year, we decided to take our long awaited trip to Italy & Paris.

Before we headed off to Europe, we took a little detour to the East Coast (Philly and Princeton) to see family and loaded up on cheesesteaks, hoagies and pretzel dogs from the Amish Market, of course. Yummy!

What better way to start our European trip than going to the food capitol of Italy...Bologna. Situated in between major city destinations, it's easy to take day trips and perfect for those who want to experience great food and old architecture without all the tourists. It remains an old run down medieval city filled with so much to offer and eat!! Aside from its fame in the origin of bologna, tortellini/tortelloni and Bolognese to name a few, Bologna is also known for having the world's most porticos (pix: Eric posing under the one of the many porticos). This sure came in handy when it rained. And even though some places were closed for vacation, we enjoyed hanging out with the locals. Definitely a return destination on our list.

Here are a few places we enjoyed (sorry, we didn't get a chance to take pix of the delicious food, somehow we ended up eating it before we realized we should have pix'd it first) :

TAMBOURINI'S One of the largest deli's. (pix: Ruthie attempting to bite some cheese @ Tambourini's)

LA TUA PIADINA Super small hole-in-the-wall. House-made piadines (flatbreads) filled with sliced to order bresaola, proscuitto, mortadella, etc.. We loved it so much, we're almost halfway through our frequent buyer card!

ANTICA TRATTORIA SPIGA A mom-n-pop restaurant in the middle of almost nowhere. Delicious risottos. Worth the trip.

GROM GELATO We can't vouch for the quality in its other locations, but this was among the best tasting (least sweet, best texture and flavor) from the few we sampled. By few, we mean few.

President's Day Weekend Hours

This post is in response to an anonymous individual who last night commented on our blog entitled "We're back in Action!". We regretfully erased what they said, but if our memory serves us right, it went a little something like this: 'Both of you are mean, awful ego driven people.'

Wow!! At first, we didn't really know how to react. Where did that come from? Were they referring to our coming back from vacation? Would it be considered bragging to post pictures and tell stories from our trip? What makes us such mean awful people? Ego driven? We ended up erasing it because we thought it was an uncalled for statement. Unfortunately, we should have left it, but the process could not be reversed.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. We don't know why this person felt the need to say what he/she said or what we possibly did/didn't do to make them feel this way, but its all a matter of context. We love what we do and are very passionate about it. We're hard working individuals pouring our hearts and souls in every aspect of our business. We are confident in the product we provide because we never compromise in what we believe in. If this is mistaken as ego driven, then we don't know what else to say....

We're troubled by a statement like this because we do our best to warmly welcome customers. Through the years we've grown to know most of your names, exchanged stories, etc.. or at the very least remember your faces. You are our extended family! Granted there may have been moments we were tired and forgot your faces or names, we always remember how blessed we are and try to show our appreciation for your business.

It's February 1st and as we promised we came back and opened shop. We're happy to be back home and excited to see everyone! We hope everyone had a pleasant holiday...despite the rainy weather. See you soon!!

Greetings from Europe!

Hi Everyone!
Well we are 8 days into our vacation and we miss our fans :P We're currently in Bologna and preparing our tummys
to expand in our feastings. I'm sure many of you have been to Europe (seems like we're the only ones who haven't) and have your fave places to go...so we'd love to hear your suggestions!! Many thanks to those who have contributed their time, books, addresses & numbers, journals etc.!! In a few days, will rent a car and make our way down to Florence, Pisa and then to Cinque Terre for pesto, focaccia and seafood. Hopefully, driving won't be a nightmare...at least we'll be driving on the right side! And after all that eating we suppose we'll try and squeeze in some ice cream..ehm!, gelato we mean.

Italy is such an amazing country with so much to do....maybe we'll stay? Nah, we still have Paris, France!
